He was a ranch hand for most of his adult life, turning to the Laborers Union in his early forties until his retirement. <\/p>\n<p>He loved to fish and hunt. He was a master at playing jacks and would often challenge his children to a hearty game. Dad liked to cook hot Mexican food and play pinochle with family and friends over coffee. He enjoyed long walks and grew a mean garden. Dad was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and watched his team win Super Bowl XLV. <\/p>\n<p>He was married to Yvonne Gay in 1959 and Yvonne continues to reside in Helena. <\/p>\n<p>His father and mother; sisters, Margaret, Addie and Emma preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Mary Gonzales of Sunnyside, Utah; his children, Sheila Velarde of Helena, Jo Ann (Mike) Copeland of East Helena, Stephan Velarde of Helena, Lillian (Ed) Tovey of Helena, Patsy (Keith) Goble of Gillette, WY, Brandy (Charlie) Armstrong of Oak Harbor, WA; stepdaughter, Lola Hagerty; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. <\/p>\n<p>Joe will be laid to rest in Grand Junction, Colorado with his father and two sisters.
