In March of 1958 he moved with his father to Lovell Wyoming, where he discovered wide-open spaces and peaceful landscapes. It was here that his father taught him to rock hound, arrowhead hunt, and love the great outdoors. He spent much of his time fishing and hunting in the Big Horn Basin. He found his peace in early morning fishing trips, long days in the woods, and the rhythm of country dancing on warm summer nights. He lived his life with a simple and quiet joy that touched all who knew him. He was the kind of man who didn’t need to say much; his actions spoke louder than any words ever could. Whether teaching his kids how to hunt and fish, sharing the many stories of his life and childhood, or taking his turn on the dance floor, JC moved through life with grace and a strong faith.

He is survived by his seven children, Carolyn (Jeff) Kiteley, Jay (Anita) Sherley, Jeri (Chuck) Markworth, Sheri (Rick) Niemiec, Dutch (Robin) Sherley, Jacie Sherley, Dusty (Jeri) Sherley, 20 Grandchildren and 26 Great Grandchildren. His siblings Jannie West, George Sherley, LaDelle Rodgers, Lloyd Sherley, and Connie Allen.
