Melody Gilmore Ritchie, 73, of Helena, Montana, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, at her home, surrounded by the love of family.
Melody was born on May 6, 1952, in Miles City, Montana. She grew up on a ranch outside of Marmarth, North Dakota, near the Montana border, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse on the ranch with her older brother Dennis, her older sister Sherry, and her younger sister Pam. Melody attended seventh and eighth grades in Marmarth and later moved to Baker, Montana, to attend high school, where she lived in a garage that had been converted into an apartment. She worked at Samsels Clothing Store and at the Lakeside Drive-In Movie Theater to help pay her living expenses.
In 1971, Melody married her high school sweetheart, Kelly Freier. Together they had two sons, Aaron and Michael. They moved to Glendive, Montana, where Melody attended community college. Melody and Kelly later moved to Williston, North Dakota, and then to Billings, Montana.
In addition to being a devoted mother, Melody became a top salesperson for Jafra Cosmetics throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
From 1986 to 2003, Melody worked as an outside sales representative for Insty-Prints (Allegra Printing) in Helena, Montana. She excelled in this profession, known for her outgoing nature, engaging personality, and a natural naivety and openness that people found endearing. Upon her departure, her boss referred to her as the best customer service specialist in the Insty-Prints franchise.
Melody met Frank Ritchie in Helena in 1990, and they were married in 1995. Melody became a loving mother to Frank’s three daughters, Shar, Jacqueline, and Lesa, and a deeply cherished grandmother to their first granddaughter, T’Arah, followed by eight more grandchildren and eventually five great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
In 2002, Melody’s son Aaron tragically passed away at the age of 29. This loss left a lasting ache in Melody’s heart. Despite her grief, she continued forward with remarkable courage, living her life with grace and resilience, always present for her husband, family, grandchildren, and friends.
Melody and Frank founded Ritchie Land Surveying in 1997 and Ritchie Rentals in 2002, and together they developed a subdivision that same year. Melody played a key role in both the development of the subdivision and the day-to-day operations of their businesses.
Later in life, Melody worked in activities at Big Sky Nursing Home in Helena and at Elkhorn Rehabilitation in Clancy. It was Melody’s idea to introduce live music into the activities, and she often invited her husband Frank and close friend Jack Oberweiser to join her in playing and singing for the residents. Melody led the activities with warmth and enthusiasm, singing along and encouraging participation, helping residents feel engaged, connected, and supported. She formed meaningful bonds with the residents, who held her in great affection.
Melody was loving, generous, and deeply caring. She was treasured by her husband and best friend, Frank, as well as by her family and many friends.
Melody is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Frank A. Ritchie; her son, Michael Freier; her daughters, Shar Ritchie, Jacque Ritchie (Kevin Harper), and Lesa Craig (Michael Craig); her nine grandchildren, T’Arah Craig, Kalob Craig (Savannah), Justice Craig, Kourage Craig, Kanen Craig, Maverick Harper, Astraea Craig, Heston Harper, and Jaxen Craig; her five great-grandchildren, Julian, Isla, Avi, Georgia, and Samuel; her sisters, Sherry Bohlman (Erv) and Pam Hutton (Ken); and several nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, Aaron Freier; her mother, Dorothy Gilmore; her father, Russell Gilmore; and her brother, Dennis Gilmore.
To those who loved her, Melody was more than words can capture. Though we mourn her passing, we find comfort in knowing she is now at peace and free from pain.

Melody was my best friend and my soul mate. We were together for 37 years. Helping her transition was hardest things I have ever had to do, but I am grateful that she was able to die at home and that I was holding her hand when she took her last breath. I miss her every minute of the day.
Thank you everyone for your kind and loving words.

Melody was in my life for a short time and I was quite young so I don’t recall a whole lot but I do have a lot of great pictures and the bits of memories I have of her I’ll cherish forever. She used to dress me all up in pink frilled dresses with laced gloves and matching hats. I still have the fragile dolls she and my late daddy bought me. I remember playing with plastic guns and we’d all (Michael, Aaron, my daddy and Melody) would run around the treasure estates basement home trying to get each other oh it was Soo fun! Coming back from a camping trip we had the boat and camper behind me and Michael were in the front my dad driving and boom the truck shook and I heard Michael says “oh sh*t!” I said oh you’re going to be in trouble but needless to say everyone else said the same thing – the boat flipped off the trailer into the ditch. No cellphones anything then well and I’m only 5 so that was all I remembered. I carry a piece of her with me still today.
